happy new year

new year- new shoes! probably should have replaced them sooner, however! 2008 has been a banner year at mooklettes. our little family continues to grow in knowledge, good health and love for each other.
my little feet carried me several hundred miles and got me over one huge wall.
my friendship with my running buddy means even more to me than ever and facebook has brought old friends back into my life.
my class this year is a needy one, but oh so kind, and very hard working. i would go to the end's of the earth for them!
and, of course, in 2008 we here at mooklettes worked as a team to help get Barack Obama elected and are excited to watch him sworn in later this month.

be safe tonight and enjoy a fresh start tomorrow!

advent, dec. 23

trepidation-

an odd emotion in advent, but certainly one that is felt...

mary and joseph must have been filled with trepidation as they made their way on the journey to their child's birth.

today i will try to be at peace with myself and others as the run up and expectations continue to ramp up.

advent, dec. 22

creativity-
not something associated with advent, but i was thinking all about this on my run yesterday. i was braggin' on my friend, ermina, who has just had a very successful art show and really grabbed life by the horns to express herself creatively and fiercely- very powerful.

so what i was thinking was that creativity is one thing that separates us from other creatures. we humans look at things and think to ourselves how can it be challenged, how can it be turned upside down, how can i make it better, how can i bust convention and challenge others thinking. score one for us humans!

and wasn't that how jesus approached his ministry on earth? by challenging, looking to make it better, questioning and turning things upside down. today i will think about the ways that i challenge others (in a good way).

advent, dec. 19th

see what i mean about waiting? you had to wait for my next entry- tough, i know!

waiting only makes receiving better...like my students today, chomping at the bit to be done with school for two weeks. however, they had to wait out the day. in the meantime we kept them busy with fun and small rewards. this is much like real life: we are waiting for the next life and in between we keep busy with our earthly life and other small rewards!

waiting-
not always easy...the anticipation builds and the temptation to hurry things along, does too.

it is important to appreciate waiting as part of the journey.

advent, dec.16th

fidelity-

woke up this morning to bing crosby's adeste fidelis, and started thinking about what it means to be faithful- to oneself, to others, to God.

fidelity is a daily choice. it is an affirmation that you believe in something bigger than yourself. it is how you keep a larger world view. if you are only faithful to yourself and your worldview, then the universe becomes a very small, selfish place. however, if you are willing to be faithful to others, even when they disappoint, a gift begins to reveal itself. what one begins to see is the beauty in being fully connected to others, even when it is painful. often, after going through disappointment, the resulting joy surpasses what one thought was possible.

as for fidelity to God, belief in what cannot be seen with the eye or touched with the hands, is to open oneself to the beauty and the mystery of the universe.

in the end, faithfulness takes an enormous risk. one that brings beautiful rewards.

today i am thankful for the people who show fidelity to me. this cannot always be easy- as I am sure i try patience. i am reflecting on the faith i show in others. do i let the people closest to me know that i trust them?

advent, dec. 15th

oopps- so i missed a few days- sorry! well, that brings me to what i am thinking about today- humility:

i am reflecting on jesus becoming fully human and what that means when we talk about showing empa thy toward others.you know, when you think to yourself- i wish so and so had to walk in my shoes? well, jesus did. he went throughthe experience of being human when there was truly no need to.

so today, i will try harder to be empathetic and to remember that all people have a story to tell and everyone needs someone to listen.

advent, dec. 11th

continuing on with the "joy" theme today- it reminds me of retreats when we used to sing "I've got joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart! (Where?)down in my heart..."

as we get older, one function of life is that it becomes more complicated and, perhaps, less joyous. i suppose this is an important part of growing up. but, i think it is important to find that joy and to live it. i am blessed and today i will remember that.

advent, dec. 10th

one of the pieces of our advent calendar is a little heart with the word "joy" stitched onto it- i love that one, because isn't that how are hearts should be? today i will reflect on the joy that is in my heart and share it with my family...

advent, dec 9th

still pondering the life of mary...
it inspires me to think of the trust she placed in God and the bravery she needed to show the world

today i am thinking of moms all over the world who put their needs second to their children

Advent, Dec. 8th

"But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." luke 2:19

I think of this verse so very often in my life. From when I was first pregnant and only I could feel the baby, right up until today when I want to remember both the joys and sorrows of raising kids. it is my connection to mary and reminds that she, too, felt the baby move, raised a little boy, worried about his mistakes, took pride in his acomplishments and suffered at his loss.

my heart is so full of the wonder of kids!

Advent, Dec 7th

today is the anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor- so much suffering and agony brought to bear on so many

today i will be mindful of the many men and women who follow the commander-in-chief's orders and do their mission. in so doing, they put themselves in harm's way and their families suffer in their abscence.

there is real suffering in the world, and today i will pray for the families who receive that awful visit that delievers devastating news. i will pray for solace, comfort and peace of spirit.

Advent, Dec. 6th

In the year 346, at the age of 76, Saint Nicholas passed away. He is recognized by all christianity as the forerunner to the idea of Santa Claus and today is his feast day. Saint Nicholas was a woodworker with a reputation for secret gift-giving.

Today i will remember how important it is to give without expecting notice, or recognition. i will also think about how many people have real needs that go unmet each day: physical, spiritual, emotional and that i haave been greatly blessed to have a roof over my head, food, friends and faith.

Advent, Dec 4th

just learned that my teachng partner's mom is sick...
sometimes waiting is made difficult by anxiousness, fear and worry. today i am being mindful of all the families that are, this minute, waiting for news, results, findings...i am appreciative of my kids' health and safety, that of my spouse and my own, as well. today, i will remain mindful that others are struggling

mooklettes advent calendar, beginning a day late

i must say, that advent is a wonderful time of year for me- time for reflection and preparing. i really enjoy it and try to make the most of it...so here is a mooklette's advent calendar, of course, starting one day late!

"Know that I, the Lord, bring about kindness, justice and uprightness on the earth..." Jeremiah 9:23

today i will try to focus on reacting first with kindness...

a really nice break!

thanksgiving was just a great weekend...
we had a nice day off the day before to get ready- baked pies and tidied up the house. the following day we headed to the mr.'s family and enjoyed ourselves into the evening. on friday, joe headed to granny and papa's, the mr. went to hang with his brother, and the rest of us enjoyed a chance to read, play video games and be lazy. saturday was awesome, becuase paul blew into town and we redid thanksgiving dinner. on sunday we headed to hemet to celebrate my brother's b-day and had a wonderful dinner cooked by my sis.

we are tremendously lucky to be surrounded by wonderful friends and family...

up this week: the return of book club! YEAH!

good-bye to all that

i prefer thanksgiving to new year's in term of reflecting and thinking about new directions. it is the beginning of advent, and a great time to think about the coming of christmas.

this year i am most thankful for being able to say "good-bye to all that" to a corrupt government that has condoned torture and made it seem as though thinking people were to be feared and loathed.

our president elect is already proving he will govern from a thoughtful, reflective, practical, intelligent position.

i am thankful to say good-bye to the headaches that have been, literally, plaguing me. one little netti-pot later and my headaches are gone. i am so grateful, as they took their toll.

i am thankful to say good-bye to the wall i ran into. things are looking up on that front.

i am looking forward to saying hello to:
president obama and the new first family
the coming days and the good times they will bring
good friends who look out for me
having my parents and sis close by
my mooklettes- whom, even when they make me crazy, i love so very deeply
my mr.- he is just a fabulous man in every way

what to do when you come up short?

as my sweet running buddy knows, I have come to a place where I have been completely unable to motivate myself out the door. it even started prior to my last half-marathon, which was a a disappointing performance...so, i have been struggling to sort it all out, it has taken a long time to figure out what is wrong, but i was able to run with kath and our dogs today, and it was wonderful.

i have been plagued by headaches and they have really taken their toll on what I can get done during a day, because by 730pm it all hurts so much I just go to bed with the baby. that leaves me up at 4, but then I start to make up for all the things that didn't get done the night before- laundry, housework, schoolwork, school lunches, uuuhhh paying attention to the kids and the mr...

at any rate, i am trying to figure out the cause of those headaches- have you noticed that moms have zero time to go to a dr? today i go in search of the netti- the netti pot as seen on my nemesis oprah's show...people who tweet, tell me it works...i am willing to waterboard myself if it will stop these insane headaches- as the kids say, whatever

other things draining me- teens. sorry, but you know who you are and you have to admit, there has been a lot of conflict lately- knock it off! ;)

but the thing that was escaping me finally came home to roost today, after my first run in nearly five weeks...had it occurred to me four weeks ago, it would have been great, but i'm deep and soul searching takes some time... i am bad at running, and i didn't enjoy doing something i'm bad at- there, i said it. (note to kathleen: keep reading, don't pick up the phone, yet) now, by bad i don't mean i trip every couple of steps, i mean, I AM SLOW. i will never finish a race quickly, and i like to be good at things...

what i was fighting against was, do i take my ball and go home or do i keep running just because i enjoy it? like everything, there are times where it is joyous and times when it is not- it becomes just one more thing to do.

so, when i came up short, i threw in the towel, but now i am deciding to be patient with myself and find a way back to enjoying it. i thoroughly enjoyed today, because i was back with kath and yammering, when i am on my own, i enjoy the music or listening to the desert when it is just waking up.

when you come up short on something in your life, the only thing i can tell you is to be kind to yourself and to be patient- you.are.worth.it.

catching up

we celebrated a wonderful election cycle and veteran's day by taking the kids to several of our favorite museums. we had a great little trip together and enjoyed watching joe take off to photograph- he has a great eye for it!

we tried to make it to the norton simon, but it was too close to closing time, so we went on to our favorite restaurant, Damon's in Glendale. We have been going their for 20 years- it has been open since 1937 and is a complete throwback- in decor, in price and quality food!

the next morning, on to the Getty. really a beautiful day. we enjoyed both the galleries and the gardens. c. loved the family room, with its big bed and books. jt enjoyed the art mystery cards the museum provides, k. spent some quality time with her dad and joe was busy photographing the gardens.

after the getty, a great lunch at Palimino in westwood- wonderful food, chic atmosphere (good thing we dropped in at lunch!)

from there we continued down wilshire to the la brea tar pits and then on to LACMA. The vanity fair photgraphs exhibit was great, as was the hearst collection. when we had our fill of fine art, we headed home. it was great to have day together that was out of routine!

sign, sealed, delivered

it has been an overwhelming night here at mooklettes and the sense of wonder and hope has stayed with us this morning. the kids get it and they are inspired: joe is thinking about the peace corps and the future ahead, k. and j.t both left here with obama stickers on this morning, and c. has been running around all morning saying "President Obama"...the mr. and I are still emotional and stunned...

it is stunning to have a family of color as our new first family

it is stunning to have a politician stand up and say thank you for all you have done via text, email and speech

it is stunning to listen to a man say to those who did not support him, i still support you- i will be your president, too

it is stunning to have seen PEACEFUL crowds take to the street to proclaim one of the greatest historical moments of this great country

it is stunning to listen to a man say, and mean it, that he will make mistakes, he will not always be popular, but he will always be honest

it is stunning to hear a politician remind people that things worth having are not obtained easily and that we have a great deal of work ahead of us as a nation

it is stunning to hear our new president tell us that he believes in all of us and our power to change the world

to those people who are fearful, you need to read this...it is time someone told you that God did not make a black and white world. in his infinite wisdom, he gave humans a soul and free choice and placed us in a world filled with ambiguity. perfection comes in our next life, not this one. one of the most important things that comes with living a life of faith is knowing that even though you do not have all the answers, you do not need to fear, because you are loved by a power that surpasses all imagination. therefore, when i see messages that say things like "we need to move", "I fear for our country", etc, because you did not like the way an election turned out, I think it is imperative that you look inside and into the corner you have painted yourself into with hard line positions that don't take into account that we all live here together. the greatest comfort you will find in the coming days, i predict, is that if you give Obama a chance and participate in this amazing, stunning democracy, you will find a warm embrace and you will see that things are not as bad as you make them out to be.

we are the change we are waiting for- we have proven it, soundly. we have appealed to the better angels of our nature- God Bless America

KNOW HOPE

my hope and faith in the american people has been affirmed. this is an amazing night- there were tears of joy here at mooklettes, from everyone in this little family. we live in a country where you can start out anywhere and become President of the United States- unbelievable. goodbye cynicism. goodbye fear...

election day

today is the day. time for us all to come together andrecord our choices. it is such an amazing gift to have a voice in our government- thank you to all the men and women who came before me and helped secure my right to vote...

yesterday, with three of the four kids in the car, we pulled up to an intersection where people were campaigning for No on Prop 8. We rolled down the windows and asked if we could have one of their signs. they took one look at our car, which has No on Prop 8 painted on the windows, and started to call over their friends. then one of them looked at joe and said, "is that your mom?" joe said yes and the guy said, "you should be proud of her, she's really brave." it was a great moment for these really nice guys to realize that all kinds of people support their right to equality.

one more time...here it is...KNOW HOPE! YES.WE.CAN.

2 days and halloween update

did not make it to the phone bank, but we did paint up our car windows with messages: Obama/Biden 08 and No on 8...

halloween was a low-key night. we had fun and c. just beamed as she walked from door to door collecting candy there is no way i will let her eat! joe went off with friends, therefore no pics of him. k. and j.t. came along with us and helped us out with my sweet nephew, p.

it is not an easy day for teachers- the kids are excited and can't focus, we depend on parents to show up with goodies, and we are under tremendous pressure to do some fun things, all while keeping order...i think next year, i'll take a personal day :)

I have already voted, so I have mostly turned off the news, etc, as it all makes me to neurotic! Yes, i proudly voted for Barack Obama and proudly voted NO on Prop 8...
As the campaign comes to a close, Barack onceagain reminds us why he is the right person for the job: KNOW HOPE!

8 days and counting

8 days to go until the voting comes to an end- what an exciting, exasperating time to be an american! while much of the back and forth get tiring (even for a political junkie like me!)

i have been thinking about all that we, as a family, have learned over the past 18+ months of campaigning and all of them are lessons we can apply to our lives:
-to stand up for what we think and back it up with evidence
-not to be bullied by others, regardless of how they represent their beliefs
-to listen to others, even when we disagree
-to talk about why we disagree, later, in private, so as not to hurt feelings of those we need to show respect for
-that adults don't always tell the truth, and just because someone is a teacher does not make their arguments factual
-that you can disagree with some positions of a candidate, but support the bigger picture.
-words matter
-your vote counts
-dinner is more interesting when you bring some ideas to the table
-that you can persuade people, if you are brave and well reasoned
And, the most important lesson of all:
-the choices we make today, shape our world for the future.

Why I will not vote Yes on CA Prop 8

I was driving K. to the middle school to drop her off for drama and there, outside our church, was a "Yes on 8" sign. I was taken aback that our church would directly enter into the political fray by displaying campaign signs, and it has caused me to really question my membership in the church.

Prop 8 is the attempt of the mormon church, the Knights of Columbus (of which my dad and brothers have long been members) and the christianist churches to outlaw same-sex union in the state of CA.

this is purely discrimination and an attempt to drag religion, once again, into the public governance of this state.

I cannnot, in good conscience, support a propostion that says that members of our community are, somehow, less than the others. let me tell ya' a same sex couple does NOTHING to diminish my marriage or my family. in fact, committed same sex couples strengthen my community by fully participating in the institutions that we have declared important.

Jesus preached love and tolerance, and I teach my kids the same.

Furthermore, the campaign for the "Yes" vote is full of misinformation, which tells you that they are on the wrong side of this issue, morally, because they have to lie to bolster their case.
-lie #1: Churches will be forced to marry same-sex couples. This is completely FALSE. Due to seperation of church and state, churches cannot be forced to marry anyone they do not wish to. EXAMPLE: divorced catholics are not allowed to be married in the church without an annulment.
-lie #2: schools will be forced to teach "gay marriage". Again, completely FALSE. guess how many times I have taught "marriage" in nearly 20 years of teaching- exactly 3 and those times were in catholic school as part of the marriage and family life curriculum. public schools don't teach marriage! in our high school health class the curriculum is available for review by the parents and parents have the right, by STATE LAW, to opt their child out of any teaching that covers topics of health and sexuality.

in closing, I will vote no on prop. 8 and I will take my weekly contribution to my church and send it to the "no on Prop 8" movement. as a democratic society, we need to honor those who want to step up and fully participate in our institutions. we will have stronger families and communities when we do not discriminate.

crunch-time, the importance of artists and other thoughts

greetings! mooklettes reminds you that the time to register to vote is drawing to a close.i don't want to hear about how you are trying to avoid jury duty, either. it is crucial that you exercise your constitutionally protected right to vote- it does matter!

i have been reflecting on the importance of artists in our country over the past couple of weeks during my morning run. i find it funny that people think artists shouldn't have an opinion on things that deal with national policy and how support from an artistic community can lead one to being labelled a"celebrity". i don't necessarily think artists should hold more sway than others, but part of the reason that people come into a national consciousness is because they can effectively communicate their thoughts in a way that grabs people's attention. if that was an everyday talent, then we would all have crowds of thousands following us, wouldn't we?

it is with this in mind that I am going to try and connect some dots...as we stand at the edge of what i hope will be a turning point in american history, many artists have stepped up to talk about american values: equality, truth, living fearlessly, questioning the government when necessary, and standing as a beacon of freedom for all people, here and abroad. these are just some of the qualities that seperate america from other countries. the u.s. is really the only place in the world where you can go from having nothing, to expressing yourself on a national stage. that being said, please take a few moments to view the three following videos, even if you have seen them before, because as a set, they show what is important in the country and it is shown through the eyes of artists who have stood up, fearlessly, to express themselves and to give a voice to those who are not heard. it is important when artists are courageous, they mirror the society they are part of (not seperate from) and through their gifts and talents that they so generously share- they honor you and me.

god bless all artists, particularly, on this day, bruce springsteen and tom smothers and will.i.am....
(it should be noted that an important part is left off Tom's speech- he sacrificed his opportunity for a writing emmy in 1968 because he felt his controversial views regarding the nixon adminsitration and the vietnam war would hurt the success of his team, including a little known comedian named steve martin- tom, i gotta' say you are someone i admire greatly, and you sure were smart to marry such a classy, intelligent, good-lookin' gal. in our current political climate where people are being hoodwinked by sarah palin and her "folksiness", marcy is my ideal of a role model for my girls!)

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

section 8...

no not the thing klinger in MASH begged for and no not the housing for poor people...

section 8 is slipped into the bailout as proposed by the Bush adminsitration- not just Paulson, whether the president is brave enough to show his face or not, he is partly to blame for this situation...

once again, we find bush trying to play king and make a grab for unchecked power...this is what section 8 says:
Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are
non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed
by
any court of law or any administrative agency.

This is what the president of the united states and his cabinet think of the american people. we are only here to enrich him, personally. when we ask for accountability he behaves as though we are stupid or disrespectful. in fact, it is this man who has blatantly disregarded the very foundations of this county, and he has been allowed to by the citizens of this country, because every time we start to catch on HE MAKES US AFRAID. being governed by fear, in your personal or political life, is no freedom.

i've said it before, and i will again- these are serious times and this country needs serious thoughtful people. keep your eye on chris dodd, whom i would have gladly supported for president, he is the lone voice talking about how important it is to proceed carefully and get this financial package right.

the time has come for each of us to decide that we are done being lied to, we are done being made afraid and we are ready to listen like adults to what thoughtful, reasonable people have to say.

please, please, please call or email your senator and representatives and ask them to make sure those 32 incendiary words are removed before any agreement is reached.

back on track

kath is right when she says, "no fall races!" it is too hard to train when it is already 100 degrees at 5am. however, now it is better in the mornings and with my little runny buddy, lily, i have been able to get back out there before race day! thank goodness, because otherwise it was going to be a disaster. the jury is still out on whether the foot is broken- too lazy to go to the dr., but it seems to be holding up pretty well...

a word or two about mccain-palin

seriously? am i supposed to be impressed by a woman who brings so little to the table, and what she does bring is just so very troubling? was i supposed to be wowed by the white faces of the rnc behaving like "ugly americans" and attempting to drum up fear?

i watched the whole convention; i like to hear both sides of the equation and to be well-informed. i am definitely not what you would call a "low information voter".

first, we vote for the top of the ticket. mccain's choice of palin only serves to elucidate how the man makes decisions. what he reveals is that he is rash and reckless and will do anything to win the election, even when it is not in the best interest of this country. he has chosen someone he met only one time, who is involved in numerous scandals at home, who lies freely about her record and desires to bring her fundamentalist religious beliefs into the public square.

Next, mccain's willingness to conduct himself in a dishonorable fashion sickens me. he has been fully taken over by the extreme right wing, with karl rove leading the way.

also, it is not just a campaign slogan- mccain really does want to continue with bush's policies. on every issue, he has voted with the president and in his stated policies, there really is no light between the two men.

for me, the reckless behavior, the dishonor and policies are absolutely enough to keep me from voting for mccain and to inspire me to work for obama. however, it is not limited to the above...

mccain would like to dismantle public education in this country. for obvious reasons, this is completely offensive. he states that parents and students should be in charge of the system. unfortunately, what happens when public schools are privatized, the low performing students are pushed out. what you are left with is something we see often in CA- a two tier system: one largely white and middle class and the other minority and poor. In the poorer schools, you will see more emphasis on testing, no art, music, field trips, social studies or science. I absolutely agree that the NEA is going to need to come to the table on some issues, but until there is a real way to hold parents and students accountable, the system will remain broken.

next, the ticket refers to "victory" in Iraq. what does that look like exactly? will their gov't repay the massive debts we have racked up? will we be repaid in oil subsidies? i'd love to hear their description- which is not forthcoming.

also, mccain has little interest in improving our daily lives as is represented by his approach to the economy, social security, medicare and education.

finally, and this is the issue that is most aggravating to me, we do not live in a theocracy. God bless our founding fathers who assured us of that! religion does not belong in our politics, government or courts. i do not want mccain selecting the next supreme court justices. i won't stand idly by and allow our country's policies to be co-opted by a religious movement.

along the way people have tried to describe voters who support Barack Obama as easily influenced, naive, swayed by celebrity. this is all noise. the truth is that I, and many others I know, support him because he knows what we deal with everyday when it comes to the economy, our schools and families. further, he listens carefully. he is thoughtful and smart and does not make reckless decisions for himself or our country.this is one of the first times i am voting for somebody, rather than against somebody. so, no, I am not afraid and I will continue to send money to Obama/Biden and will look for other ways to volunteer to work for him.

if you are interested in a country that puts the people first, that restores peace, that represents the best of this country and celebrates it- then work for Obama, as well.

what a night

truly. did you watch it? obama stepped up and delievered a convincing and outstanding argument as to why he should be the next President of the United States. Do you think MLK really thought 45 years later that would happen?

obama proved he is more than just words, and not afraid to stand up for himself. how could any one think otherwise, anyway? do people really think he got to where he is by just letting things happen?

he and michelle are the American dream embodied. they work hard, they care about their kids and mine, they are faithful to each other, they did what was asked of them each step of the way: stayed in school, worked hard, lived honestly, & grace back to their community. amazing, because it is ordinary and what many of us try so hard to do each and every day.

it gives me great hope that the regular people in this country are able to recognize the truth of him. these are serious times and we need a leader who is thoughtful and serious and faithful. fortunately for us, he is here and ready- his name is barack obama!

Yes We Can...

Barack Obama has become the first African American in American history to be chosen as the nominee of a major party.

this is a great day for this country and i am so proud that my children witnessed this historic moment with me.

end of summer...

i am not particularly attached to the season of summer, i much prefer the fall, however, i do love the lack of schedule and long lingering days with the kids.

we have had a good summer- time at the ocean, time at the lake and time with some of our extended family. we went to sea world, kayaked, jet-skied, ran and played in the pool.

of course, summer means c. has a birthday. now she is two and it goes without saying that time just flies by! she is tall, talkative and funny! she is also stubborn and demanding. c. still loves to read and now she plays with legos, thomas the train and stuffed animals. her favorite things to say are "no", "i am a woman", "barack obama", "that is my toy", "i love you, ____", "mama's pretty", and "big girls wear diapers"...

that last one is problematic, eh?? she has zero interest in potty training and i have 100% interest. however, on this one she wins. this is new for me, the others were easy. oh well, i am pretty sure she won't graduate HS in diapers and she is just too much fun, so no complaints!

she does sleep in a big girl bed, so the crib has been packed away. that was a bittersweet summer day!

now we look ahead to a new school year. the mr. and i have been pouring over our test scores, seeing what we did right and where we can improve. we will be having a new sitter for c., we are excited about having markie join us, but nervous for the transition. the other mooklettes are more than ready to get the school year started. joe has a really tough schedule and is still finishing up his assignments that are due on the first day. k. begins with marching practice next week, is ticked that she has to wear a uniform, and will make every effort to keep her perfect 4.0 as an 8th grader. j.t. is rarin' to go to middle school- excited and nervous. we aren't worried, he is more than ready!

onward...

a week ago tonight...

well-it was definitely the things I thought it would be, plus even better...

we had a great time:

-saying hello to people and reflecting on how awesome we all look- LOL! ( i got- "you look the same, just grown up!)

-looking at old press clippings of ourselves

-getting a chance to talk about Chris H. and his life after high school

-seeing pictures of everyone's kids and wishing they were there in person

-watching a little break-dancing face-off

-taking a spin on the dance floor with Michael for old time's sake
-watching the mr. and kimberly's husband have a great time together

-heading home, content with my life!

counting down...

okay- tomorrow night is the big night- 20 year reunion, and all that. toes are polished, brows are waxed and outfit is chosen...will tell you what I think on monday...
(i can already tell you what I think- it will be great to be out with my husband, even for a chicken dinner. - it will wonderful to be with kimberly and michael; i'll post pictures. - it will be nice to talk, in person, to some of the people I have gotten reaquainted with on facebook. it will be really special to share my memories of chris h. and the good times we had together after high school. -it will lovely to share how happy i am in my life with my family& friends.)

memories continued...

forgive the photo of a photo- i don't have a scanner at home...

unfortunately, the person i would most want to see at the reunion won't be there. the pic above is of myself and my other best friend chris hales. we are headed out for a spin in a 67 mustang and my husband says i look like i am drunk with joy over being with chris (they grew to be good friends early in our relationship and marriage). he won't be there because he passed away in 1997 and there is not a day (for real) that goes by that i don't think about him and miss him.

it is true that he's always with me because i carry him in my heart, but i would give anything to feel his arms hug me or to see his awesome smile or to hear him tell me a joke in person, not in my head.

i will tell you that i think he is my youngest son's guardian angel, as there have been several times that i have felt chris' protective presence at times when j.t was close to being injured. (jt was born days after chris passed away)

i have spent most of today looking at some old cards and letters from chris and they are a gift to me- reminding me how very proud he was of me and how much he cared about me.

the thing i admired most about chris, and you would have to have known him to know that this is the total, 100% truth, is his unfaltering kindness. you have never met anyone who acted so completely out of love and was so slow to anger. that is the part of him i try to instill in my children and the part of him i hold close to me.

i miss him terribly...

20 years and many memories

here we are on graduation day- the kids think we all looked alike because of the big bangs and permed hair... i am thrilled to be able to say that both women are still part of my life.

while nan(right) and i have not seen each other in a long time, i hear from her occasionally and i am happy that she has a great family.

kimberly, and for this i am more thankful than i can express, is part of my daily life and has been for over 25 years. i have blogged about her before, but it bears repeating that i think she is fantastic and the best friend a girl could ever have. i'm looking forward to spending the night of the reunion in her company, with her awesome husband.

it is hard for anyone from the outside to understand how many hours we spent together on a daily basis in junior high and high school. we saw the world together, saw the best in each other (and, ok, sometimes the worst- but we got past it!), and love each other deeply.

it is really gratifying to watch your best friend go out into the world, kick butt, have a happy life and raise a beautiful family of her own!
so, here's to you kimberly!

beautiful girl...

c. is two today! what a wonderful two years it has been. we have such fun over the past two days relieving going into labor and getting to the hospital- it was a whole family experience! everybody got up in the middle of the night, got to the car and made the 30 minute trip to the hospital. the kids hung out with me and the mr. while i labored, coaching and rubbing my legs and back. then out into the hall for the delivery (their choice!)...and as soon as she was here (five hours later) back in to meet their long awaited c.

since that early morning she has brought us all closer together. she makes us kinder and more fun. each of us enjoys looking at the world through her eyes. she is a blessing, indeed!

energy plans

this is the part of politics i hate- the nasty, flippant attitudes...now, while obama DOES have a comprehensive energy policy, he pointed out one thing that we can all do that would make a big difference and the GOP is mocking it hard core. it is something that we, as citizens, are always asking for- something practical we can do to save money and the environment. obama remind us to keep our tires inflated to the correct pressure. now mccain's campaign is acting as though this is the totality of obama's energy policy- whatev...

from TIME magazine: (emphasis mine)
But who's really out of touch? The Bush Administration estimates that
expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day
by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of
our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping
tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add
another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right.

i feel the earth move under my feet...

a teachable moment and a reminder in the form of a 5.4 earthquake arrived today. of course, where we are, far from the epicenter, no biggie. still, the lessons remain, prepare and have a family plan. mooklettes need to know to sit tight, whether at home or school...

a growing obsession

okay- thomas is certainly not new to me, as i have logged many a happy moment with the pbs show, but when our other kids were little, they had a wooden railway other than thomas (sue me, we were poor!)

now, thanks to some stealthy activity at the clearance aisle of target, we are the proud owners of a thomas set (that works with our old one!) and a train table- all at scandously discounted prices.

it has already paid for itself, too- c. was up sick during the night and the only thing that made her happy was to play with "my thomas"- at 2 am, you can do anything you want sweety!

along with these wonderful turn of events, i have now won my first ever two items off of ebay (shameless, i know), combed the factory websites for discounts (found!), and discovered a local close out sale, where tomorrow I will mercilessly interrogate the shop owner as to what stock he has left. oh yeah, also joined a chat forum on the subject, but don't tell anyone, because that is embarrassing...

broken heart?? part deux

back from the ultrasound- not as much fun as when there's a mooklette hiding in there! they didn't rush me off to the OR, so i'm guessing not much will come from this...

what becomes of a broken heart???

hopefully it isn't broken- but the dr. saw something they didn't like on a routine EKG, so i have been on a holter monitor for 24 hours and will have a sonogram later today. as many of you know, my dad has heart disease, so i do try to take care of myself. neeedless to say- this has thrown me for a bit of a loop...however, i don't think anything will come of it, but it explains why i am so distracted, of late!
peace- j.

a summer storm...

when you live in the desert- you really appreciate days without sun and the exceedingly rare rain. last night we were treated to a summer storm with thunder and lightning- it was really great! today we got a break from the sunshine with a cloud cover that has been around all day- BLISS!

we here at mooklettes are feeling exceedingly lazy- still housework is getting done, meals are being prepared and some of us are getting really good at rock band!

from our carmel getaway...

gratitude

on friday, it was time to wrap up another school year- kiss those kiddos good-bye and head out to a well deserved celebration. my entire family was brought up short by the sudden passing of tim russert. an all too visible reminder that we can be called home at any moment, no matter how much we prepare or how deeply we love- we will be going home.

my family and i have a deep sense of gratitude toward tim russert because he provided a true-life example of what it means to be a good man, a good Catholic and a good American. to fulfill each of those roles it takes shouldering responsibility and living hopefully. each demand that you question, question, question and that you have faith in God and in your fellow man.

as we celebrated father's day and our anniversary, we reflected on tim russert's passing and the example he set in the pure joy he had for his family and friends. we, too, feel blessed and in awe at having a front row seat as our children grow and mature. we are thrilled to have so many to share our everyday events with. we are thankful for our parents and the gifts they bestowed upon us.

i think that tim russert leaves an enormous legacy for his friends, his family and all of us; and that it is remarkable that one person can so impact our lives in the most powerful of ways- by his example.

Then there were two...

k. will be 13 on tuesday and i'm just getting ready to make pancakes for the girls as the "slumber" party winds up. another teen in the house!?! how very exciting and rewarding for us, actually. you begin to see, more fully, the adults they are well on their way to becomming. this young lady is creative, smart, mature and wise. she is kind, funny and well liked. truly a blessing in our lives and the lives of others. we are incredibly lucky to have been blessed by her! happy day, coco!

a spin around the block

the mr. and j. were away at science camp this week, so joe and i took advantage and had a little driving lesson. it was something to be on the passenger side! he did great- mostly coasted down the street- 3 left turns and one right and back in the drive. what was funny- besides seeing him so nervous and concentrating so hard, was that someone else in the neighborhood was out doing the same thing at that moment and we kept passing them. the look on the two drivers' faces was equal parts "i can't believe i'm doing this" and "look at me"- much like when they were two and learning to climb, or some other dare devil type stunt!

shocking, to me!

it has taken just about a year (end of june is when I first got my nike+ chip) but I have now run over 500MILES!!

never would i have thought i would stick with something like this- seriously- it is unbelievable to me. i must say that while i have not lost a single pound (if i would change my diet, i would, but a girl can only do so much) i have gained a much better outlook on how to handle my challenging days and complicated life. more importantly, my relationships have been improved. the miles i have logged have been with c., kathleen and the mr. i have grown from their coaching, honesty and inspiration. (yes- c. tells mama to move that stroller faster!)

next up: iron girl, del mar. seriously, you should think about running it (1oK/5K). it is all about woman power and grace in daily life. it is an event dedicated to reminding us how important it is to take care of ourselves. the extras are: tech shirt, finisher's medal, aflac duck, two tickets to the del mar fair, and breakfast- for real. i.am.so.excited.

bloggin' the mail, part 2

i am lucky to have married into two really wonderful cousins- both of whom i appreciate beyond measure. so when i won something from amy's blog- i was tickled pink! she has a wonderful eye for detail and color and a strong vision of how to pull items together in such a way that you say to yourself: i. want. that. amy creates wonderful paper items and art using vintage pieces like wallpaper. she is also really talented with fabric & jewlery- you name it. to see how talented she is, visit her shop, please! seriously, click away from here and go, now!

so here is what came in the mail...thanks, amy! xoxo- j.

seriously- the bird's nest?!? love it. and the way each note card is so strikingly different and wonderful?!? don't get me started on the gift tags made of vintage wall paper- i have to go buy a gift right now!

bloggin' the mail

today's installment...BOOKS

my mom's day gift was a gift card to barnes & noble...here are the results! now, some pride themselves, and rightly so, on bargain shopping antiques, items for their e-bay store, craft materials, etc. for me, it is all about the books. (the library has no bigger friend than i!) pictured above are the fruits of three hours' labor (plus- not pictured two books for j. and one for c!). color me ecstatic...

our next installment...a surprise package from a swetie cousin!

WIP

for the uninitiated it is Work In Progress- and my cousins Jen and Amy take it to a whole new level! rare is the opportunity for me to share a WIP, although i could photograph stacks of half-graded papers or partially done laundry, it just isn't the same as their wonderful work!

so, i'm thrilled to be able to share this project that the mr. and i brought to our kids at school. it is the Poet Tree ( say it fast) and it is the joint effort of two local poets (one of them a dear friend). it is a place for kids to go, draw, write and share. when they write a poem, they leave it in the mailbox and i pick it up. then i share it with the school by posting it in a display case. the kids are pretty enthusiastic about it and we have gotten a great response!
there are poems on display in the tree, the piece of driftwood to which the letters are mounted represents out life journey, the windchimes remind us to keep a song in our heart and the open birdcage: an open mind. (yes- i painted the mailbox, but the kids helped with everything else)

here is a sample poem that made it into the tree:

I am mad
My dad is sad
Like a bird in migration
he flew and flew
away from me
-austin g. 8 years old

oh what a night

Yes. We. Can.

as andrew sullivan says, "know hope."
peace.

21 months

it is shocking to me that c. is going to be 2 at the end of the summer- we certainly can't imagine life without her, and yet, it has gone so very fast!
as you can see, she has more hair than any baby should! she also has all her teeth...(that is her "fake" smile in the picture)
c. counts to 11 without help and 20 with help, she still loves to read, she enjoys sesame street and playing with her babies and knows some letters by sight.
at 21 months, she eats like a horse and tries a little of everything.
this little one thinks that if she closes her eyes, you can't see her, will hide from you to keep from getting into trouble, knows how to tantrum, and is becomming very familiar with "time-out".
her favorite things to say: Daddy's home! Barack Obama! Who do'd that? Outside, please! I love you mama! Hello, morning!
things to look forward to: big girl bed (mom is too lazy right now to take that on!)

well, duh!

This article outlines research that says the oldest has it tough in family. No kidding! Someday I would like to be paid to research the obvious. I could have saved them alot of trouble if they had just called me. By the time baby C. is Joe's age, she'll have a tv, computer, cell phone, car and driver, no curfew, and can office aide for every spot in her HS schedule! Why? I'll be too tired to care...

peace in our times?

well-things got emotional around here when K. presented Joe with a scrapbook of pics and a handwritten letter for his birthday.
the thing the mr. and I have most stressed with our kids is that long after we are gone, they will have eachother (God willing). generally they look at us like we have 3 heads when we say this. but, sometimes, you get to glimpse the future and having one of them say to the other- "hey- you are a good person and I care about you", puts us over the moon!

15

today my oldest is 15- obviously it has been on my mind as several blog entries have been about him of late.

when i came out to the living room this a.m. and saw five hulking boy-men sleeping, it made me smile. Joe has chosen his friends well, and isn't that a comment on the kind of man he is becoming? he and his friends amaze me with their talent and the potential they will soon be bringing forth to the larger world: musically gifted, downright funny, technologically savvy, relatively well mannered, kind, kind,kind...

so, joe, you are doing well and today your dad and i are going to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our efforts. you are well on your way to accomplishing any goal you set for yourself and we will be rooting for you the whole way there!

xoxo-mama

testing 1,2,3

state standardized testing has begun- it must be spring!
oh how painful to tell a child, "Sorry, i can't pronounce that word for you- do your best!"
agonizing- watching some of my students fade in and out of concentration and mark a bubble even though they have no idea what they just read.
sad- these kids have worked hard and have shown growth, but it all comes down to these three weeks.
how about a test in the fall and a test at the END of the year? look at the child, look for growth!
(trivia for you: testing is required to take place 150 days into the school year. this is for the convenience of the testing company, so they can get the results back. don't you think that the companies making millions off of testing could hire a few more people to run scantron sheets and score reports? why are the kids forced to cram 180 days of instruction into 150???)

well, well,well

our little corner of the world has been busy...book club with my lady crew was great. we had so much fun visiting and catching up while watching Rebecca. let me tell you, all the world's problems could be solved if they would let us at them.

a new little girl has made her debut. we are excited to meet finley kate and congratulate sweet sarah!

i also had a chance to get out with 3 out of 4 mooklettes and do a little shopping and lunch. we had such a good time. then we followed that up with mom, dad and joe out by ourselves for lunch and great conversation- joe is such an interesting young man. he has always had a wonderful sense of humor and I enjoy it, even when I shouldn't.

watched bee movie this weekend, too. adored it as we are big seinfeld fans!

hope all is well in your little corner!

of teenagers and toddlers...

is there a difference, really? this has been on my mind of late, as i have both species in the house.

  • ill-fitting clothes?-check
  • hair a wreck?-check
  • up at all hours of the night?- check
  • joy to tantrum in 60 seconds?-check
  • listens to music parents dread?-check
  • causes parents to worry about lurking danger?-check
  • one brings out the goodness of the other?-check

so many similarities: explosive physical growth and development, seperation from mom and dad, going out into a larger world, increased expectations of behavior and responsibilities.

it is such a great vantage point from which to put it all into perspective. this is a process, all part of becoming a fantastic human. watching these two intereact is to witness grace here on earth and it is to be reminded of how fundamentally good teens are when you are willing to take the time to dig deeper.

Women Running Wild

this is the only time I want something with "wild" in the title associated with my gals...a 5k for breast cancer and the mooklettes hit the road for the first time together...my girls make me proud! K. was awesome- her first race...she started out at my side, then got brave and made her own way (what a metaphor for raising kids). She finished in 34 minutes- way to go girl!

My Mom

Where does one begin??? I find it impossible not to get emotional when I think about my mom- her love for me and my family (one husband, six kids, 4in-laws, 14 grandkids) moves me profoundly.

What moves me the most about her is her faithfulness- to us, to God, to her friends. You just don't find anyone truer than her.

The thing I most appreciate about her looks is her beautiful smile. It is my first memory of her and will be the thing I remember forever.

What I love most about her personality is she says what she thinks.

As I have been enjoying having a baby in the house again after so many years, I find myself surrounded by memories of my mom and I- going to church, to Mrs. Lamb's restaurant, her fixing up my room at different points in my life, showing me how to bake, how to iron and how to clean- mostly i am left with the memory of just how much she enjoyed my presence in the world- enjoyed every moment. I am so thankful to have been so welcomed and loved!

So, now I return the favor- somewhat inadequately- on her birthday. I love you mom, I am lucky to spend time with you, you mean the world to me!

Happy Birthday! j.

4000

And the 4000 number, which will be all over the news this week, and devastating as it is, tells only a fraction of the story. One hundred forty-five American service members died of self-inflicted wounds. The wounded totals 29,314. And incalculable are the number of lives forever altered because loved ones never returned home, or came back with disabilities that will never fully heal; marriages broken, engagements terminated, children who will never know their parents or who many know them only as hostages to wheelchairs or hospital wards.

let us pause and reflect...

down we go-

one by one, the mooklettes are getting a stomach bug! such easter fun... first little c., then all together the mr, joe and k. JT is currently debating whether he is sick or not,but i fear it will soon be out of his hands...as for me- hard to say, but i'm hoping for the best.
i think the easter bunny should save himself and bypass us

pink-slips- not the pretty kind...

it has been awhile since i visited this space, not good for keeping up a really sad hit-counter-

the economy is mess- the mister was pink slipped for the coming year...it isn't permanent until May, so we will see. missus could be back full-time, and that is okay...what isn't okay- is attempting balance the budget on the backs of kids and teachers while the federal gov't bails out multimillionaires...

today is the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq- we are almost to 4000 dead Americans. it makes me sad in a way I can't articulate.

it is also the anniversary of the day i lost my aunt and godmother- i miss her every day. she was such a reader and she taught me to play cribbage- i adored her!

even with all that is so topsy turvy in this world- we are healthy, we have a plan for lean times and my two youngest are reading together on the couch- we are so blessed!

jim's green drink- to make it all better

my kids and hubby cheering for me at the finish

as always- kath's reassuring, positive, enthusiatic presence. she kept me going when I wanted to stop. i lost my stuff at mile 12 and she was awesome

up next- IRONGIRL in June...my personal goals- start strong & stay strong, be a better partner for Kath, get a bit faster...

cathleen- sweet sis in law

Cathleen is my sis-in-law and she is:
loving
creative
beautiful
fashionable
smart
savvy
lovely

happy birthday, cath!

monday, monday

except it isn't- it is tuesday, tuesday, but yesterday was a day off school and there is no song title that says tuesday...you get my point.

unbelievable weather here- i am sitting outside enjoying peace and quiet and some new transition lenses in my glasses...

all is well in our corner of the world. baby c. is a genius- just ask her and she'll tell you so. dr. said not to bring her back until well after her 2nd birthday as she has many, many words, sentences, phrases and expressions. he is decidedly not worried about her speech devleopment. she continues to surprise us each day with new words and is able to express her desires quite clearly- eggs, please...let's play a game, rock your baby, and on and on...so 18 months is a great time for us!

valentine's day is this week- not a holiday that chris or i worry much about, but i am sure a certain teenage boy will make an effort to do something nice for his girl.

okay- geese just flew right by me- love it!

tonight we will watch the election returns and proudly wear our Obama pins, make some tacos for dinner, go on a family run and GRADE PAPERS- YUCK!

Countdown to Palm Springs Half Marathon: 5 days- makes my stomach queasy just thinking about it!

take care and enjoy the week
